Frequently Asked Questions

Travel Planning & Rocky Mountaineer

  • Based on my Rocky Mountaineer itinerary, which day should I book my Moab Adventure Center tour?

In your Rocky Mountaineer final travel documents or dedicated Guest Portal, your itinerary will show which days are ‘free’ to explore Moab at your leisure. Book your tours on those ‘free’ days, or add extra days in Moab at the beginning or end of your Rocky Mountaineer journey for more time to explore!

  • Can I book a tour the same day my Rocky Mountaineer train arrives or departs in Moab?

Yes, however only Arches National Park Morning or Afternoon Tours can be booked on the train's departure or arrival day from or into Moab. Please pay close attention to your arrival and departure times for Moab, to avoid rushing to or missing a tour.

  • Are the Moab tours booked on this site exclusive to Rocky Mountaineer guests only?

Only the Arches National Park Morning and Afternoon Tours are exclusive for Rocky Mountaineer guests. All other Moab Adventure Center tours will include Rocky Mountaineer guests and non-Rocky Mountaineer travelers. Giving you even more opportunities to meet new friends and travelers!

  • Why can't I see my Moab Adventure Center tour in my Rocky Mountaineer travel documents?

Moab Adventure Center is Rocky Mountaineer's third-party partner so any bookings done through this website will be separate to your Rocky Mountaineer booking. You will receive separate confirmation documents via email from our team when you book with us.

Destination & Tour Information

  • What are the temperatures like in Moab, Utah?

In the summer, red rock country is characterized by hot and dry days, mild morning and evening temperatures, and lingering sunsets. Our hottest months here are June through September; July often reaches 100 degrees Fahrenheit. Keep in mind that this is a dry heat, so you may not feel like it is as hot as more humid parts of the country, but this can actually be quite dangerous if you are not listening to your body and keeping hydrated. It is recommended to have at least 2 liters of water per person with you at all times. You may need more depending on what activity or tour you choose. An occasional summer thunderstorm can result in spectacular waterfalls that cascade from the tops of towering sandstone cliffs. Daytime temperatures in the mountain valleys and on the mesas can be as much as 10 to 20 degrees cooler.

For other times of the year, the temperature can vary. You can count on jacket weather in spring, with temperatures averaging around 70 degrees in April and creeping up to the 80s by May. Fall is pleasant and mild, ranging from the 80s in September to the mid-70s in October.  In some areas a balmy Indian Summer can linger into November.

  • What are the most recommended tours?

Moab Adventure Center offers tours for a wide range of traveler preferences and capabilities.

Summer visitors to southern Utah often spend the morning enjoying mountain biking and hiking to avoid the heat and then spend the afternoon pursuing activities such as rafting or 4x4 trips. Popular evening activities are sunset Hummer Safaris or Sunset Jetboat.

If you are unsure which tour might be best for you and your group, the tour experts at the Moab Adventure Center will be happy to help you find the perfect fit for you and your group. Contact the Moab Adventure Center today!

  • How strenuous are the tours?

Most tours are relatively easy and only require a mild to moderate fitness level. However, some do require more walking, coordination, or physical exertion. If you are unsure if a tour is a good fit for you, contact the Moab Adventure Center

  • What is the intensity level of the rafting tours?

The full and half-day rafting tours are mild in intensity ranging from class I to class III whitewater.

Colorado River AM Half-Day Rafting Trip: Mild Class I-II whitewater

Colorado River Mid-Day Rafting Trip: Mild Class I-III whitewater (Depending on water levels)

Colorado River Full Day Rafting Trip: Mild Class I-III whitewater (Depending on water levels)

    • Class I whitewater: “Fast-moving water with riffles and small waves. Few obstructions, all obvious and easily missed with little training. Risk to swimmers is slight; self-rescue is easy.”
    • Class II whitewater: “Straightforward rapids with wide, clear channels which are evident without scouting. Occasional maneuvering may be required, but rocks and medium-sized waves are easily missed by trained paddlers.”
    • Class III whitewater: “Rapids with moderate, irregular waves which may be difficult to avoid and which can swamp an open canoe. Complex maneuvers in fast current and good boat control in tight passages or around ledges are often required; large waves or strainers may be present but are easily avoided.”

  • Are gratuities included in the cost of the tour?

Gratuities are not included in the cost of the tour.

Your guides will make every effort to see that your trip is enjoyable and successful. Gratuities for guides are greatly appreciated and at your discretion, as a gesture of thanks for their professionalism and service. A general guideline for an average gratuity is 10 percent of the total trip cost

  • Are meals provided on any of the tours?

All tours, except the rafting and flightseeing, provide snacks.

Please refer to your Moab Adventure Center confirmation for your meal inclusions. If you have any dietary restrictions, contact the Moab Adventure Center to let them know ahead of time.

  • What if I am prone to motion sickness?

If you are prone to motion sickness, it is recommended to avoid the Hummer and rafting tours due to unsteady movements.

Depending on the severity of your motion sickness, consider taking an anti-nausea tablet before the tour at your own discretion. The tours will not be able to stop mid-way and may be far from Moab, so please decide ahead of time if a tour will be right for you.

  • What if I have a pre-existing medical condition?

Due to extreme heat and varying degrees of activity levels, some tours may not be the best fit if you have a pre-existing medical condition. If you have any pre-existing medical conditions or health issues, please contact the Moab Adventure Center to determine which tour will be right for you.

  • Do any tours have mobility restrictions?

Depending on the type of mobility restriction, some tours may not be the best fit; however, we will be happy to speak with you to find the best tour options or to make accommodations where possible for a more comfortable excursion.
